What a wonderful concept, thank you!

I cyber-pottered straight off to find a definition of enthusiasm, because your words resonate. One definition was an " absorbing or controlling possession of the mind"

I've watched Stephen Fry talk about creativity and how, for those who are creative, extremes are a way of life. Our social understanding of the word 'enthusiasm' seems to have become sadly blunted.

For we who are creative, the original meaning expresses that wild, tunnel-joy that comes when we are in the zone. Everything is working and one does not need motivation, indeed one is somewhere beyond motivation: in another place where one has done all the acceleration one needs to, and now one is cruising.

And maybe that place has a name, and maybe that name is enthusiasm.

And if that's the case, then the opposite is definitely depression. But that's another story for another day.

As I read this I was filled with a fondness for my summer nights spent in beautiful Cornillon with my very own hive of hornets! To experience the initial fear/terror of these formiddable winged creatures and yet become almost attached and calm to their nightly presence, which became familiar and expected rather than frightening and unknown. Their nest, when discovered, was one of the most beautiful complex creations of nature I had experienced and I was filled with sadness to know that it must soon be extinguished. My experience of the hornets reminds me of what my son Dan often says, that whenever there is something that is so good, there will always be the possibility of experiencing it's polar opposite of being so bad and also so in the reverse. So whilst living with the hornets never felt just right, on discovering their nest they did for the first time feel just right, but within discovering this rightness they sadly lost their right to be. However I learnt much from the hornets about how one can adapt to fear, once it becomes a known quantity....
